Kedarnath

Overview
A Sacred Abode in the Himalayas
Kedarnath, located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, stands as one of India’s most revered pilgrimage destinations. Perched at an elevation of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayas, this ancient town houses the Kedarnath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the most significant of the Panch Kedar shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Surrounded by awe-inspiring snow-capped peaks, including the majestic Kedarnath Peak (6,940 meters), the temple’s remote and spiritually rich location makes it a sought-after destination for both devotees and adventure enthusiasts.
Key Highlights:
Kedarnath Temple: Constructed over a thousand years ago by the Pandavas and later restored by Adi Shankaracharya, this stone temple is a symbol of India’s spiritual legacy. Pilgrims from around the globe visit to honor Lord Shiva, particularly during the Char Dham Yatra.
Scenic Trekking Routes: The 16 km trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath takes you through picturesque landscapes, lush valleys, and cascading waterfalls. This trek combines spiritual and physical challenges with stunning Himalayan vistas.
Vasuki Tal: Situated about 8 km from Kedarnath, this high-altitude glacial lake is encircled by grand peaks, offering a tranquil retreat for those seeking solitude amidst nature.
Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi: Behind the Kedarnath Temple lies the samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century philosopher who revitalized Hinduism and established the Char Dham pilgrimage.
Gandhi Sarovar: A pristine glacial lake near Kedarnath, Gandhi Sarovar is known for its crystal-clear waters and serene surroundings. It’s a short trek from the temple and provides breathtaking views of the Kedarnath range.
